The two busiest half hours on the street

If your school sits a block off El Camino Real or Woodside Road, you know the morning rush by heart: parents double-parked at the curb, a line of cars waiting to turn in, and children on foot and on bikes trying to cross through the middle of it. Pickup repeats the scene in the afternoon, usually with less patience. A crossing guard gives those few minutes one calm adult whose only job is getting people across safely.

Our crossing guards cover private, charter and parochial school crossings in Redwood City, at the crosswalk nearest the gate or the driveway where cars and walkers meet. They’re in place before the first family arrives and stay until the last child is across.

Working to your school’s own plan

Every school already has a drop-off routine, even if it lives in a parent newsletter rather than a binder. We start with a free walkthrough at the hour that matters, watching how cars queue, where children cross and where the routine tends to break down. Then we write post orders from your plan: which crosswalk the guard holds, when the post opens and closes, how the guard works beside staff on curb duty, and the person to phone if a child is left waiting or a driver becomes a problem.

The guard takes direction from your administrators. If the principal moves the pickup lane for a rainy week or a street closure, the post orders change with it, and the guard is briefed before the next bell.

What a crossing guard does at the curb

A crossing guard holds the crosswalk in a high-visibility vest, waits for a safe gap, steps out with a hand-held stop sign that drivers can see from well back, and walks children and parents across as a group. Between crossings, the guard watches the curb, keeps the drop-off lane moving and stops walkers from cutting out between parked cars.

Guards also notice the things staff tend to hear about later: a car that keeps circling the block, an adult lingering by the fence, a side gate left open after the bell. Those go to the front office straight away and into the shift report.

Event nights, early release and the rest of the calendar

Crossings get busy well beyond the regular bells. Back-to-school nights, graduations, sports days and fall festivals bring visitors who don’t know the routine and park wherever they find a gap. A guard can hold the crossing for the evening while our event security officers take the doors, the field and the lot. For minimum days and early dismissals, send us the calendar and the hours shift to match.

Some schools want someone to stay on after pickup, signing in late visitors at the office or walking the grounds before staff leave. The same person can roll into that shift as an unarmed officer, so one familiar face covers the whole afternoon. Over weekends and breaks, patrol visits can look in on the buildings and fields while the campus sits empty.

Guards parents can feel good about

Every crossing guard we place at a school is background checked before the first shift, which is nearly always the first question a parent asks. Guards carry a BSIS guard card, and we keep the same face at the same corner as often as scheduling allows, so children learn who to look for. A supervisor stops by for quality inspections, watching a crossing in action and reading the shift notes.

We’re insured, bonded and carry workers’ compensation, and your school receives a certificate of insurance before the first morning. Daily shift reports reach the office by email, with photos attached whenever something needs a record.

Pricing and getting started

Crossing guards are billed at our on-site guard rate of $36 to $50 an hour, and the total comes down mainly to how many crossings you want covered and how long each window runs. Coverage is month to month, so you can add a second crossing for the fall or drop to mornings only in spring. Our school security page covers the rest of the campus, and a free walkthrough booked through our contact page is the place to start.

A few useful answers

Common questions

Can we book a crossing guard for mornings only?

Yes. A morning-only post is a normal booking, and the afternoon can be added later on the same month-to-month terms.

Are your crossing guards background checked?

Yes. Each guard posted at a school clears a background check first and carries a BSIS guard card.

Will the same guard be at our crosswalk every day?

That’s the aim. We keep the same guard on your corner as often as scheduling allows, so children and parents get to know them, and a backup briefed on your crossing covers any absence.

Can a crossing guard cover an evening event at our school?

Yes. A guard can hold the crossing for a concert, open house or game, and event officers can look after the doors and parking the same night.

How does a crossing guard work with our staff on curb duty?

Your post orders set who does what. The guard holds the crosswalk and the street side, your staff handle the curb and the hand-off to parents, and everyone follows the same plan.
